4.1 OM FE involved self-organizing management capability
In the OM FE involved self-organizing management, the OM FE is the controller for self-organization in the NGSON. Both NGSON node and FEs information shall be registered to and managed by OM FE. FEs can be dynamically instantiated or deleted in the NGSON nodes by the OM FE. After instantiation, the FE instances register their information (see 6.2.4.11 for more information) to OM FE.
OM FE is dedicated to provide the management functions as follows:
– Overlay management (node registration, negotiation)
— Node resource monitoring
— FE status and QoS monitoring
Role assignment and modification (node selection for FE instantiation)
OM FE manages the overlay network of NGSON nodes. The NGSON operator can deploy more NGSON nodes in the overlay network to increase the availability and performance of the network. OM FE dynamically assigns and modifies the roles of nodes by instantiating or deleting NGSON FE instances on them. OM FE will monitor and detect the node or FE failure according to the pre-configured detection criteria and then take some self-organization actions (like self-recovery or self-configuration). OM FE will trigger the SDN FE to modify and update any failed node or failed FE information in the SDN FE with the backup new node or new FE information based on the pre-configuration. It will backup by setting the failed node or FE parameters to the new node or FE. Finally, OM FE will notify SR FE to adjust its structure (see 6.2.4.5 for more information) to incorporate the new node or FE.
4.2 OM FE non-involved self-organizing management capability
Self-organization in NGSON can also be done without the continuous involvement of OM FE. In this case, the NGSON FEs self-organize themselves to be able to execute functions like service routing, content delivery, etc. until the structure and function of the overlay is restored by OM FE.
For example, SR FE shall undertake the self-organization of service routing function. Once a service routing path is disrupted due to node or FE failure, SR FE shall immediately process the service requests irrespective of the failure, so that the service routing operation ofNGSON is uninterrupted. In the meanwhile, OM FE will detect the node or FE failure and take some self-organization actions (like self-recovery or self-configuration) to restore the overlay structure ofNGSON. Then, OM FE will notify SR FE to adjust its structure to incorporate the new node or FE.
4.3 Relation between OM FE involved and OM FE non-involved self-organizing management capability
OM FE involved and OM FE non-involved self-organization in NGSON can be deployed together to achieve a high level of automation in management of the overlay network topology and operations. While OM FE is responsible for creating and maintaining the structure and functions of NGSON, the SR FE will provide the automated operational management of NGSON through the self-organization supporting function. Together OM FE and SR FE can provide fuiiy automated NGSON management function.
